Deinstitutionalization is the process of moving persons with disabilities from isolated institutions to independent living within their communities, ensuring they have control over their lives with appropriate support.
North Macedonia, Italy, and Greece are actively implementing national deinstitutionalization strategies. This Guide for Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities provides insights into key challenges, priorities, and financial resources available in these countries. It emphasizes the importance of the active participation of persons with disabilities in shaping these processes.
The Guide aims to: (1) assess the current state of deinstitutionalization and funding options in North Macedonia, Italy, and Greece; and (2) share knowledge and best practices on self-determination, self-advocacy, and supported decision-making for people with intellectual disabilities. The recommendations align with the Common European Guidelines on Deinstitutionalization and relevant international strategies.
